Cancer is a pervasive disease that has a great impact on families all over the world. It’s been forecasted that by the end of 2018 there will be 1,735,350 new cases of cancer in the United States alone and out of that number 609,640 will die from this disease ("Cancer Statistics", n.d.). Inclusively cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide, with a mortality rate of 163.5 per 100,000 for both men and women. Based on data collected from 2013-2015, It’s been estimated that 34% of men and women will be diagnosed with cancer at some point in their life ("Cancer Statistics", n.d.).
Analyzing the heart-wrenching statistics, you might wonder about strategies that can be put in place to reduce the risk of cancer or to help cancer survivors to prolong a healthier life. But first, let’s look closely of the risk factors that are associated with cancer. The first one is biological; for example - sex, age, skin types, environmental such as UV radiation, second hand smoke, occupational exposure such as chemical radioactive chemicals and last but not least lifestyle factors such as obesity, smoking, chronic inflammation( All about cancer, n.d.).
In February 2015, the American Cancer Society recommended that cancer survivors should follow a highly plant-based diet focusing on alkaline forming foods such as fruits and vegetables and unrefined processed food ("American Cancer Society", 2015). Studies also suggests that a westernized diet filled with acidic foods such as red and processed meats, sugary foods correlates with the cause of cancer. Below is a 5 day vegan meal plan suited to prevent cancer and as well cancer survivors. Each meal is delicious and highly nutrient-dense to promote alkalinity in the body refraining from creating an acidic environment for cancer to thrive in.
